But don’t worry, the pirates of Lakeland go plundering on the weekends, so you can sneak a peek at their pirate ship while they’re off raiding coastal towns and island villages. In the meantime, get excited about the awesome renovations coming to Family Fun Center of Lakeland just in time for summer.

A Change in the Wind

Are your kids adventurers, ready to go where the wind blows them? We have a fresh opportunity for fun on the horizon! Our play area has two brand new pirate ships to explore. But with all that rigging to clamber around, slides to slip down, and ball cannons for battles on the waves, these ships are sure to be battered by the high seas soon enough. And the sea scene painted behind the pirate ship playground is so lifelike, your kids will practically feel a breeze rolling in from the sea!

Our family fun center renovations are well underway, and we’re not stopping with pirate ships. Our adventures are getting bigger, better, and bolder this summer! Sneak a peek of the action during the weekends—we open at 4pm on Fridays for weekend fun—or wait and be surprised by the transformation! We anticipate reopening for normal hours around May 16th, but you know how construction goes. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for updates on our hours.

Many kids don’t have fun at family fun centers. They may feel overstimulated by the lights and noise of playgrounds, arcades, and laser tag arenas. Family Fun Center strives to be a place where all families can connect and play. We’re excited to roll out new dates for our time for sensory-sensitive kids: Sensational Sundays.

Sensational Sunday

If you have a sensory-sensitive child, it can be difficult to help your son or daughter enjoy certain experiences. Their classmates may throw big birthday parties, but the lights, sounds, and crowds make your child feel overwhelmed. At Family Fun Center, we want every child to have an awesome time. Sensational Sunday is a sensory-friendly play day in Lakeland. Once a month from 10:30am to 12pm, we’re turning down the lights and music to help sensory sensitive kids experience the fun of our Funtasia play area and other family activities we have at Family Fun Center of Lakeland. Here’s what to expect:

• Low lights
• Games off
• Low music
• Trained staff
• Stay and play all day
• Open to ages 12 and younger

We’re even opening early to keep the crowds to a minimum. Dates for 2017 are as follows:

Tips for Sensory-Friendly Play

Does your child love the idea of Sensational Sunday? Here are a few tips to make sure they have an awesome time.

1. Know your child. We do our best to make the experience fun for all kids, but know your child’s limits.
2. Plan ahead. Will your child need an extra nap before playtime? Make sure they get it so they can focus on fun.
3. Keep communication open. You want your child to have a great time. Let them know it’s okay to be honest about their experience. If they’re overwhelmed, you can always try again next month.

Has your New Year’s resolution to hit the gym already faded? You’re not alone. 80% of new gym members will have stopped attending by the 2nd week of February. But you don’t have to say goodbye to your 2017 fitness goals. How can you stick with ‘em?

How to Get Fit in the New Year

1. Make a plan. No, “lose weight” isn’t a good resolution. Why? Simply put, it’s too hard to track! Set realistic goals like “be active for 1 hour a day” or “lose 2 lb a month.” Not only are smaller goals more manageable, they’re much easier to stick to!
2. Mark it off. Did you eat a salad this week? Put it on your calendar! Did you skate for 3 hours on Saturday? Write it down! Tracking your progress makes it easier to stick to your New Year’s resolutions.
3. Bring in backup. The more people you tell, the more likely you are to stick to your goals. Even better? Do it together! Your family is a built-in support system, and let’s face it, they could use the fitness too. Active kids do better in school, get sick less often, and grow into healthier adults. Plan fun family fitness a few times a week.
4. Find something fun. Workout because you want to, not because you need to. Roller-skating is an excellent source of fitness, burning about 600 calories in an hour and improving cardiovascular health. It’s great for all ages, and it’s so much fun that you won’t even realize you’re working out.
